Hermes Agent: How to Automate Your Work (Setup Guide)
Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent from Nous Research, released under the MIT license. This Hermes Agent guide covers what it is, how to install it, and how to automate work with it without handing it too much.
Not to be confused with the Hermes language models Nous also trains. Hermes Agent is the agent software. You point it at a model provider of your choice.
What is Hermes Agent?
According to its docs, Hermes Agent keeps memory across sessions, builds reusable skills from tasks it has done, and can run on your own machine or a server. You talk to it in a terminal or through chat apps.
Two features matter most for work automation:
How to install and set up Hermes Agent
1. Install it. The docs give a one-line install script for Linux, macOS and WSL2, and a desktop installer.
2. Run hermes setup and choose a model provider.
3. Send one real chat and check that it answers before adding anything else.
4. Only then set up the gateway with hermes gateway setup.
Hermes Agent scheduled tasks: a first automation to try
Pick a task that is boring, repeatable and low risk. For example: every weekday morning, summarize new items from a few sources and send the summary to your chat.
That job reads and reports. It does not send emails, change records or spend money. Run it for a week and read the output before trusting it with anything more.
Hermes Agent costs, access and limits to check
Hermes is a good fit if you want one assistant that lives on your own server and reports to chat. If you would rather build a visual flow with fixed steps, see my posts on Dify and Flowise.
Want help picking or setting up a workflow? Send the task and the tools you already use through the contact page.
