Agent Zero AI: An Open-Source Agent That Runs in Docker

Agent Zero (also called Agent Zero AI, from agent0ai) is an open agent framework that runs inside a Docker container. The idea is simple: the agent gets its own Linux environment to work in, instead of working directly on your computer.

What is Agent Zero AI?

From the project's README and docs:

  • •A Linux environment where the agent can write and run code, use a terminal and work with files.

  • •A browser the agent can use.

  • •Memory, so it can reuse what it learned in earlier tasks.

  • •Skills, written as plain markdown files, that give it instructions for specific kinds of work.

  • •Projects, plugins and a bridge back to your host machine when you want the agent to reach it.
  • Why Agent Zero runs in a Docker container

An agent that can run code can also break things. Putting it in a container limits what a mistake can reach. It is not a guarantee. The docs say the agent has root access inside its container, and anything you mount in or connect through the bridge becomes reachable.

So treat the container as a fence, then decide deliberately what goes inside it.

How to install Agent Zero with Docker

The project recommends its desktop launcher, which checks Docker and creates instances for you. If you already use Docker, the README shows a single command:

    docker run -p 80:80 -v a0_usr:/a0/usr agent0ai/agent-zero

If port 80 is taken, change the first number, for example -p 5080:80, and open that port in your browser. On first run you pick your model provider and models.

What to automate with Agent Zero

  • •Research jobs that need browsing and notes saved to files.

  • •One-off scripts: clean a spreadsheet, convert a batch of files, pull data from an API.

  • •Repeated jobs once you have written a skill for them.
  • Agent Zero safety and cost checks

  • •Model cost. The agent loops on tasks. Watch usage on your provider.

  • •What you mount. Share only the folders the task needs.

  • •Credentials. Do not paste keys with broad access. Use scoped keys.

  • •License. GitHub lists the license as "Other". Read it before using it in client work.
  • Agent Zero suits people who want an agent with room to work and are comfortable with Docker. For a lighter assistant that reports to chat apps, see Hermes Agent.
